Group History:

The Arts, Culture & Heritage Group was established in the early 2005 as a result of the Board’s restructure.

Group Purpose:

The Arts, Culture & Heritage business unit provides leadership, guidance and advocacy to ensure the sustainability of our taonga such as tangible and intangible taonga for present and future generations. According to the Matauranga and tino rangatiratanga of Raukawa, the business unit interacts in all aspects of locating, preserving, protecting, exhibiting taonga and educating whānau and hapu on issues that are relevant to ngā uri o Raukawa, such as, restoration, preservation and exhibiting taonga. The strategic approach of the business unit is to target specific policy development and implementation processes, legal processes, operational activities, networks and forums that will yield the most effective and beneficial results for Raukawa. The group is committed to encouraging best practice in all aspects of Raukawa Arts, Raukawa Culture and Raukawa heritage.

“To Locate, preserve, protect and promote Raukawa Cultural Heritage”.

Arts, Culture & Heritage Strategic Priorities:

  1. To locate, preserve, protect and exhibit Raukawa artefacts and taonga.
    1. Compile a database of taonga that have provenance to Raukawa, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
    2. Compile a comprehensive inventory of current artefacts and taonga.
  1. Research and develop Raukawa historical archives including multi-media records.
    1. Establish a visual database
    2. Initiate a historical archival system
  1. Encourage and support participation in arts and cultural initiatives and Toi Māori.
    1. Initiate a photographic road show
    2. Promote the use of cultural activities, Te Reo me ona tikanga.
    3. Educate people living within the Raukawa rohe on the importance of Raukawa Arts, Culture and Heritage.
  1. To Establish an Iwi Cultural Centre for the Raukawa region.
    1. Identify key partnerships for joint venture
    2. Initiate a feasibility study for the establishment and sustainability of a Raukawa whare taonga.
    3. Established a strong and effective archival system for all taonga, such as photo’s, manuscripts and textile artefacts.

The Board employed Tangiwai in September 2006.   Tangiwai was born in Putaruru and spent the majority of her life in the Raukawa rohe.
 
Tangiwai has tutored schools in kapahaka, encouraging positive role models, in Te Reo, Matauranga o te rohe o Raukawa (knowledge of the Raukawa area), and installing appropriate code of conduct and respect within the students.
 
Tangiwai is passionate about Maori Arts, Culture & Heritage issues, and has followed particular interests in leadership.
